In this short, but in-depth interview, Dr. Surajit Khanna interviews Hawk Newsome, Founder and President of the New York Chapter of Black Lives Matter. Hawk Newsome is asked by Dr. Surajit Khanna to provide some back ground to his life, on how he was raised, and how he became involved with Black Lives Matter.
What Has Black Lives Matter NY Accomplished?
Surajit Khanna continues the interview of Hawk Newsome of Black Lives Matter here. Mr. Newsome provided some background to the Black Live Matter (BLM) movement and how it has inspired him. He talks about how he got involved with it. He explains that BLM restored the voting rights of 36,000 people on parole and the BLM involvement with the “Same Their Names” bill. BLM also gave what he called a “real Christmas” to 10 families s and give them cell phones, ipads, bicycles, etc. for that holiday. During COVID BLM also started “The Peoples Food Program” delivering food to 150 people everyday in the Bronx. This was all paid for by the people, having never receiving any Government money. He explained that they partnered with a number of corporations that supported them and mentions them by name.
Does Violence and Peaceful Protests Serve the Same Purpose?
Mr. Newsome was asked He explains how some many people died and nothing was done, no help from the police or the Government. This caused rage, frustration, and pain within himself and others. He truthfully explained that they serve the same purpose. He believes that people acting out in violence are just mimicking the presidents set by this country.
On August 15th, of this year is the the Nation Day for Reparations. In this segment Mr. Newsome provides his support for Reparations, mentioning how other groups have received them asking whey should the Afroamerican’s be excluded. He believes a penance should be paid to the Afroamerican people for the violence and injustices committed to them while make slaves in this country.
